Frequently Asked QuestionsFrequently Asked Questions

  1. What is a music producer anyway?
James' role as a music producer generally spans a few core areas.  He makes sure your song arrangement is up to scratch and that your songs flow well from start to finish.  He'll also assist with instrument selection and make sure that your technique in playing that instrument will result in the best sound.  In addition to traditional "producer" roles, James is also an internationally respected mix engineer, session musician and song writer.
  2. Do you work with anybody?
In short, JNP will work with anybody who has the right attitude towards their music and making it the best in can be for the genre of music that you write.
  3. Do you do demos?
It really depends on availability.  Your definition of "demo" might differ from some other people's!  If you are an acoustic artist for example, coming in to record some songs will not take long and won't cost you a lot, but they will sound a lot better than your traditional "demo" recording will.
  4. Do you do work experience/employ people?
Unfortunately not.  The JNP studio does not have the ability to have work experience students at this stage and does not, and will not, employ people at the studio.  The JNP studio is a production center equipped only for the clients of James North as a producer and is not for bulk hire.
  5. Do I have to bring my instruments?
It depends whether you have gear up to the task, or if you would like to use your own high quality gear. JNP has plenty of instruments available from a very rare drumkit to plenty of guitars, a real piano and heaps of synths.
  6. What genres will you work with?
Generally James North Productions deals with all genres of music. We do specialise in real instruments and real playing, but if you have a hip hop or pop record that is all synth based, that isn't a problem.
  7. Why are you so cheap?
As a producer, James is interested in working with as many up and coming artists as possible.  This allows for growth in the industry generally, and affords the opportunity to have a world class product to even those who have a strict budget.
  8. Why are you so expensive?
Making a record is not cheap, but it doesn't get much cheaper for something at the standard that JNP works at. Some bands spend $50,000 (and more) recording an album.  The results here at JNP are equal to or better than a lot of those records!
  9. How should I pay you?
All services require a 10% deposit and full payment is then due in advance. Bank Deposit, Bank Cheque or cash is fine for Australian clients.  JNP can also receive Western Union transfers for international clients.
